CJPP has commemorated Al Nakba (the Catastrophe) since 2006. Al Nakba is the term that Palestinians use to describe the forced displacement and expulsion of Palestinians from their homelands with the creation of the Israeli State in 1948. Some 750,000 Palestinians were forced to flee their homes as a result of the violence of Israeli military forces and the Zionist paramilitary groups in the months of April and May 1948. In line with the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, including the cultural boycott advocated by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI), CJPP initiated successful vigils outside the Sydney concerts of the Jerusalem Quartet where we distributed postcards to concert audiences to inform them about the issues. Newspaper advertisement campaign:
January 2009

CJPP endorsed and requested list members to support an initiative by Australians for Palestine (AFP) and Women for Palestine (WFP) to raise funds for a newspaper advertisement campaign calling on Australians to “say ‘NO’ to Israel’s war crimes.” The newspaper advertisement appeared in eight major Australian newspapers on 23 January.

CJPP sponsored the visit of Ali Abunimah to Australia, coordinating his Australian tour in conjunction with solidarity groups in Canberra (AJPP), Melbourne (AFP) and Adelaide (AFOPA). In Sydney, Abunimah spoke at the University of Sydney, University of Technology Sydney, University of Western Sydney, Macquarie University and Gleebooks. He also delivered the annual Nakba Commemoration address for the 60th year of the Palestinian Nakba (“catastrophe”) at NSW Parliament House on 15 May.

CJPP members and guests attended the Welcome Dinner for the Mayor of Bethlehem and his delegation, which was organised by The Australia-Palestine Twin City Committee and the Marrickville Friends of Bethlehem. Guests of honour at the reception were the Mayor of Bethlehem, Dr Victor Batarseh, his wife Mrs Marcelle Batarseh, Father Amjad Sabbara from the Church of the Nativity and Mr Anton Salman, respected Christian lawyer and Bethlehem Councillor.

Palestine – 40 years of Occupation
June 2007

CJPP, together with the General Union of Palestinian Workers (GUPW), hosted a meeting at the NSW Parliament and a rally at the Sydney Town Hall to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Occupation. Mr Paul Lynch MP welcomed guests to the Parliament House. Peter Manning, CJPP Convenor, then chaired a panel of speakers, which included Ms Randa Abdel-Fattah (author & lawyer), Ms Pinad el-Ahmad (Palestinian-Australian teacher), Professor John Macdonald (UWS), and Bishop Pat Power (Auxillary Bishop of Canberra & Goulburn).

International Day of Action – “The World Says No to Israeli Occupation

A demonstration at Sydney Town Hall to mark the 40-year anniversary of the June 1967 War, in which the Israeli army took military control of the Gaza Strip and West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

Vale Professor Tanya Reinhart
March 2007

Tanya Reinhart, a powerful Israeli voice, has been lost. She died suddenly of a stroke in New York on Saturday, March 17. Professor Reinhart was a dedicated political and human rights activist and fiercely opposed to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. She was also a proponent of an academic boycott of Israeli universities to protest the occupation. We were lucky to have the opportunity to hear her speak in Sydney in 2006. CJPP joins activists around the world in mourning her death and we extend our sympathy to her friends and family.

CJPP commemorated Palestine Land Day (March 30) with the Sydney premiere of the documentary film by Mohammed Alatar, “The Iron Wall”. The film was preceded by a talk by the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Commission of Jurists, John Dowd QC.

UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People
November 2006

Premiere film screening of Visit Palestine. The film was introduced by Mr Paul Lynch MP. Ms Rawan Abdul-Nabi then launched the Civitas project in Australia. The event was attended by over 100 people, with funds raised going to Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA Gaza Emergency Appeal. Our thanks to the AMWU for providing their theatre venue.

Public Meeting – Courage to Refuse
August 2006

Speakers included Rotem Mor, an Israeli refusenik, who spent a year and a half in the Israeli Military. He became a conscientious objector and spent a month in jail for refusing to continue his service to the Israeli army. Phil Reiss, Sydneysider just returned from the West Bank, was the second speaker. Our thanks to the LHMU for the use of their auditorium.

The Caterpillar Corporation’s machinery is directly implicated in grave abuses of human rights and humanitarian law by the Israeli army in Occupied Palestine. join the Sydney Rally, 5pm in Martin Place to demand that Caterpillar stop selling bulldozers to Israel until Israel stops using these machines to destroy Palestinian lives and livelihoods in contravention of human rights and humanitarian law.

Nakba Day Vigil

Launch of Coalition for Justice and Peace in Palestine

The launch coincides with the 30th anniversary of Palestinian Land Day, which commemorates the killing of six Palestinians in Galilee on 30 March 1976 by Israeli troops during peaceful protests over the confiscation of Palestinian lands. Speakers include Kerry Nettle (Greens), Andrew Ferguson (CFMEU) and Nejmeh Habib (Palestinian author). Our thanks to the CFMEU NSW Branch for the use of their meeting rooms.
